Montecristo is home to the only wild goat population found in Italy, which originated from ancient goats that were introduced during the early stages of domestication and are still closely related to the ancestral aegagrus. For this reason, the IUCN Caprinae Specialist Group classified this population in group A of goats gone back to the wild that are worthy of conservation and protection. Although they are of considerable scientific and cultural interest, they could have negative effects on the protected habitats and plant species of the island of Montecristo.
